MY JOURNAL

When starting out as a music producer or sound designer. It saves a bunch of time to start out using a song you like as a reference track. A reference track is something you can use to listen to, try, and basically make the same sounds, or sound-effects. So it's important to know what to listen to and how to hear an instrument amidst a whole orchestra. Know how to isolate a part of the reference track, so you  can focus on how the professionals mix the low end, or high end, or mid-range.

The Process

A lot of it is very intuitive. Then, it's all about practicing. And learning important terms and what they are used for. It's been a long journey for me to get to this point. I feel I finally have a technique—a way of doing this that works! I mean, my sound-design skills and music making skills are right where they should be. I can make a move, adjust it, re-adjust it, and go back if I need to re-adjust there too, and actually get the sound I needed. The goal is to get the sound right and the tool for that is an eq. So I have to learn how to eq, and find an app to eq with that is my favorite, then re-use what I learn on the next instrument/piece/or song.

Memory

Memory has been so very important, but maybe just as important has been (timing) the correct apps and the correct music station/DAW. If these tools are arranged in a way that a producer like me works, then it's only natural that my work will improve. Memory remains the same, but the tools have improved!
